What to Expect!

You may be wondering what to expect when entering a bodywork therapy session. You are not alone; this is a common question! In the following paragraphs, I will address several important aspects to know before you arrive for your session. Everything discussed is something I have experienced in various forms, so being informed is beneficial for both you and me!

I care deeply about my work! You are in safe hands, and I will do my best to help you relax, allowing your body to begin the healing process.

I use the terms massage and bodywork interchangeably, so please don’t be confused by that. While massage typically refers to the manipulation of tissues, bodywork encompasses a broader manipulation of the body. My style integrates both approaches.

Please arrive showered so that perspiration or dirt is not rubbed all over your body. Taking a shower beforehand also prepares you for relaxation—an essential element for a successful bodywork session.

I take pride in using quality products for your skin. I blend my own oils using MCT coconut oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower seed oil, watermelon seed oil, and jojoba oil. Each oil has beneficial properties for your skin and it will leave you feeling soft and pampered and not greasy.

It is advisable to avoid heavy meals before a session, as they may cause discomfort, particularly when massaging the abdominal area.

Drugs and alcohol can lead to irrational behavior and are contraindications to massage, so please arrive sober and free of any harmful substances. I reserve the right to refuse service if you arrive intoxicated.

As you know, staying hydrated is vital. Hydrated muscles are more pliable and can be manipulated more effectively during bodywork. Conversely, massaging dehydrated muscles can be uncomfortable for you and may lead to extra soreness afterward. Remember that proper hydration takes time, and it isn’t sufficient to drink a lot of water just a few hours before your session. However, if you feel somewhat dehydrated, drinking water before the massage is still beneficial. My advice is to consistently stay well hydrated!

When you arrive for the session, we will discuss any injuries or areas of your body that cause concern. The session will be tailored to meet your individual needs, and everything we discuss is confidential.

If you are a man with excessive body hair, please don’t apologize; it’s perfectly fine! If you decide to shave or trim, remember that stubble can be tough on my hands and arms, so plan your grooming accordingly!

A common concern among men is the fear of experiencing an erection during a massage. This response is completely normal and nothing to be ashamed of. Touch stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the "feed and breed" system, which explains why an erection may occur, in addition to any growling stomach sounds during a massage. It’s unfortunate that some men avoid bodywork therapy out of fear or embarrassment regarding this natural reaction. Society has often misconstrued touch as inherently sexual, leading to misunderstandings around body reactions. However, touch is an essential human need, and there’s no reason to feel uncomfortable about it.
